Lleyton Hewitt will be looking to maintain his unbeaten record against Radek Stepanek when the pair meet in the first round of the Shanghai Masters on Tuesday. Former world number one Hewitt and fellow veteran Stepanek have met on the ATP Tour on three previous occasions – bizarrely all in Grand Slam events – with the Australian emerging victorious each time. The most recent clash came in the round of 16 at Wimbledon three years ago where Hewitt fought back from two sets to love down before winning in five. Stepanek retired when trailing against Hewitt at the US Open in 2003, after suffering a straight sets loss in the first meeting between the pair at the Australian Open earlier in the year.
Despite claiming the scalps of several high ranked players in 2012, Hewitt has struggled in recent matches and has a 13-11 record for the year. He lost to both Florian Mayer and Cedrik-Marcel Stebe in straight sets during Australia’s David Cup playoff against Germany last month. Czech ace Stepanek has a 20-23 in singles matches this year.
Controversial teenager Bernard Tomic will also be in action on Tuesday when he lines up against Florian Mayer . The German has won both meetings between the pair in straight sets , including a 6-4 6-2 6-3 success during last month’s Davis Cup tie in Hamburg.
