Ange Postecoglou will take the reins at Melbourne Victory for the first time when his side tackles cross town rivals Melbourne Heart in the 2012/13 A-League season opener on Friday night. The addition of dual premiership winning coach Postecoglou to Victory’s staff is just one of several key personnel changes at the club, with last season’s marquee signing Harry Kewell having moved on. Internationals Ante Covic and Carlos Hernandez also left the club in the off-season, although several new players have been added to the squad. Socceroo Mark Milligan has inked a permanent deal at the club after spending the second half of last season there on loan, while former Adelaide United star Marcos Flores was probably the biggest of Postecoglou’s signings.
Melbourne Heart also have a new man at the helm this season, with former Socceroos striker John Aloisi having replaced John Van‘t Schip. Brazilian talisman Fred was injured for a lot of last season and will be looking to start the new season with a bang alongside new recruits Richard Garcia and exciting youngster Golgol Mebrahtu.
The sides met three times during the last campaign, with two of the matches ending in a draw , while Heart recorded a memorable 3-2 victory in front of a bumper crowd in December.
