Melbourne Victory will be looking for their first win of the 2012/13 A-League season when they host Adelaide United at Etihad Stadium on Friday night. After opening the season with a 2-1 derby defeat to Melbourne Heart, things went from bad to worse last weekend with a 5-0 drubbing at the hands of defending champion Brisbane Roar. That result left Ange Postecoglou’s side at the bottom of the table, yet to register a point and with a goal difference of -6. Victory will be boosted by the return of Archie Thompson , Mark Milligan and Marco Rojas from international duty with the Socceroos and their experience will be vital as the club goes through this difficult period.
While Melbourne has been one of the competitions disappointments to date, Adelaide is the only team to have registered two victories from as many matches. Last week’s 1-0 win over Western Sydney may not have been achieved with the authority that many predicted it would, but the Reds still collected the three points without several of their best players. Dario Vidosic and Zenon Caravella should both be available for selection after missing the match against the Wanderers, while defensive lynchpin Nigel Boogaard is facing a race against time to be fit after injuring his ankle at training this week.
Melbourne Victory has won 14 of the 31 meetings between these clubs, while Adelaide has been successful on 10 occasions and seven matches have ended in draw . The last clash resulted in a 1-1 draw and was the fifth successive fixture between the sides in which the Reds managed to avoid defeat after previously losing nine straight against the Navy Blues.
