South African Charl Schwartzel is just one of the star names headlining the field for the Perth International, starting at the Lake Karrinyup Country Club on Thursday. The 2011 US Masters champion is coming off a strong showing at the inaugural Turkish World Golf Final, where he collected $600,000 as a beaten semi-finalist. It will be fourth time that the 28 year old has played in Australia after starring for the International team in the Presidents Cup last year.
Also eyeing a share of the $2 Million in prize money for the event, which is co-sanctioned by the European Tour, is American Ryder Cup star Jason Dufner . World number ten Dufner has been one of the most consistent players on the PGA Tour this year, with wins at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans and the HP Byron Nelson Championship. At the Ryder Cup last month, he was one of the USA’s star performers to finish the event with a personal record of three wins and one loss.
Several other international stars are set to line up at the event including American Bo Van Pelt , Italian Eduardo Molinari and Englishman Paul Casey . Former world number three Casey has struggled with injury over the past couple of years and is yet to register a top twenty finish in 2012, but has wins on both the PGA and European Tours under his belt and will be more than competitive if able to find anything like his best form.
Perth residents Greg Chalmers and Brett Rumford head the local charge, with Chalmers looking to build on an exceptional campaign in his homeland last year. The 39 year old collected both the Australian Open and Australian PGA Championship in 2011 on his way to being crowned the PGA Tour of Australasia Order of Merit winner.
