Victorian Bushrangers teammates go head to head at the MCG on Saturday night when the Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades do battle in the Big Bash League. Despite going into the tournament as one of the fancied sides, the Stars have struggled to make an impact in the competition and have collected just a solitary win, against last placed Brisbane Heat. Only Rob Quiney and David Hussey have made significant contributions with the bat and their bowlers have struggled for consistency.
After losing their opening two fixtures, the Renegades have bounced back strongly with consecutive wins against the Thunder and Sixers. It is no coincidence that their improved performances have come on the back of Brad Hodge’s return to the side, with the gun batsman making 44 and 72* in his two innings. He has put on good opening partnerships with Aaron Finch and their contribution at the top of the order is essential to the team’s success. The bowling attack has also stepped up, with Pakistani import Shahid Afridi and Dirk Nannes performing particularly well.
