Novak Djokovic  and Rafael Nadal  will meet in the final of the Australian Open on Sunday night, after world number one Djokovic came through an epic five set match against Andy Murray in the semi-finals. After squaring up in both the US Open and Wimbledon finals last year, it will be the third consecutive major that they have faced each other in the final. The Serbian well and truly had the better of his opponent last year, with all six of their meetings – each in finals – ending in his favour. The pair have met an incredible 29 times and despite last year’s dominance, Djokovic trails Nadal 16-13 in the career head to heads.

Djokovic had to dig deep in his semi-final against Murray to come from two sets to one down before winning 7-5 in the fifth set. That match lasted just shy of five hours, and the world number one looked completely exhausted at some stages. The tough match is sure to have taken quite a bit out of him, but he will need to be at the top of his game to defeat Nadal.

The world number two also had a tough semi-final match, defeating four times Australian Open champion Roger Federer in four tight sets. After losing the opening stanza 7-6, the Spaniard rallied strongly to defeat the Swiss ace. Having played his last match a day earlier than Djokovic, Nadal will go into the match with 24 hours more than his opponent to recover from the semis. That could be telling.
