Great rivals Roger Federer  and Rafael Nadal  will square up at Melbourne Park tonight for a place in the Australian Open final. Four time champion Federer has sailed through to the semi-finals without dropping a set, but Nadal is a totally different proposition to the opponents that he has faced so far.

The Spaniard has also played well throughout the tournament, despite losing the first set against Tomas Berdych in the quarter finals. He has won seventeen of the twenty six matches that he has played against the Swiss ace. The head-to-head record doesn’t tell the full story however, with twelve of those wins coming on clay, on which Nadal is virtually unbeatable. ‘The Fed Express’ has won six of the nine hardcourt duels between the pair including the most recent, when he prevailed in straight sets  at the ATP World Tour Finals last year.

This is the second time that the pair has met at the Australian Open. Nadal defeated Federer in an epic five set  match in the 2009 final here.
