Melbourne Victory v Sydney FC

Despite being touted as two of the leading contenders for the A-League this year, Melbourne Victory  host Sydney FC  on Australia Day with both sides struggling in the middle of the table. Melbourne are languishing third from bottom of the table on 19 competition points and need to start collecting some wins under new coach Jim Magilton if they are to have any chance of playing in the finals. Last week’s 4-1  defeat in Perth obviously didn’t help, and it is time for superstar signings Harry Kewell and Archie Thompson to deliver.

Sydney FC hadn’t won in six matches before their 2-1  win over bottom placed Gold Coast United last weekend, where they overcame a halftime deficit to emerge victorious. Despite their inconsistency, a win against their arch rivals would cement their place in the top six and keep them firmly in the hunt for a finals berth.

These teams opened the 2011/12 season on October 8, playing out a 0-0  draw. Strangely enough, the deadlocked match was the eleventh draw  between the sides in 22 meetings.
