Manchester City  will be hoping for a chance to add to their trophy cabinet when they clash with Liverpool  on Thursday morning (AEST). The Citizens are no strangers to big stage matches after winning last year’s FA Cup and will be hoping to turn their 2012 Carling Cup bid around with a win over the Reds.

The Reds however are in the box seat to reach this year’s final, after winning the first semi-final leg 1-0  at City’s Eastlands Stadium, thanks to an early penalty by Steven Gerrard.

City will need to score at least one away goal and keep the hosts scoreless if they are any chance of progressing. Star striker Mario Balotelli looks certain to miss the clash after he was charged with violent conduct by the FA earlier in the week after appearing to stamp on Scott Parker.

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish has put his players on notice after a recent run of poor form has seen the Reds slump to seventh position on the Premier League ladder compounded by a humiliating 3-1 loss to struggling Bolton in their weekend fixture.

The winner of this leg will be firm favourites to take out this year's final where they will face Championship team Cardiff after the Welsh outfit progressed to the final with a dramatic penalties win over Crystal Palace.
