2008 champion Maria Sharapova  can advance to her third Australian Open final if she can defeat world number two Petra Kvitova  in the semi-finals today. The Russian has been in terrific form in the tournament to date, losing just one set on her way to this match.

Wimbledon champion Kvitova has been equally impressive and won through to this match with a 6-4 6-4 win against plucky Italian Sara Errani in the quarter finals. The Czech also has a clear mental edge over her opponent, having beaten her in straight sets  in the Wimbledon final last year.

The first semi-final pits defending champion Kim Clijsters  against in form Belarusian Victoria Azarenka . The Belgian holds a 4-2 career advantage over the third seed, although Azarenka won the last matchup between the pair, in Miami last year, in straight sets.
