The San Francisco 49ers will go into the NFC Championship game against the New York Giants on Monday morning (AEST) full of confidence that they can win their way through to the Superbowl after last weekend’s amazing win over the Saints. The 49ers triumphed 36-32 thanks to a late touchdown with just nine seconds on the clock against New Orleans last week to book their place in the NFC decider after winning the NFC West division with a 13-3 record.
The Giants scaped into the playoffs thanks to dominant wins over the Cowboys and Jets in the final two rounds of the regular season but showed that they deserved to be there by beating the top seeded Green Bay Packers in the divisional playoffs last week. Their 37-20 win over the defending Superbowl champions sent an ominous warning to the other teams still in the hunt that they were serious contenders. The Giants have won all four of the NFC Championship matches that they have contested, including a win over the 49ers in 1991. Interestingly, that match was played at the scene of this fixture, Candlestick Park.
The most recent meeting between the teams ended 27-20 in favour of the 49ers on November 13, although they had home ground advantage and the Giants were missing several key players through injury.
