Australia’s great hope at the Australian Open, Bernard Tomic , faces the formidable figure of Roger Federer on Rod Laver Arena tonight. While Tomic is quickly making a name for himself on the world stage, the man he is facing is widely regarded as the greatest player in the history of the game. The Swiss ace has won 70 career titles, including sixteen Grand Slams and four Australian Opens. While Tomic is on the rise, many believe that Federer is in the twilight years of his career and could be past his best. They suggest that this could be the ideal time for the young Australian to face him.

Tomic has had to fight hard to get to this stage of his career however, and over five sets, faces a monumental task. In each of the first three rounds the world number 38 has lost the first set before going on to win the match. He has already taken out 22nd seed Fernando Verdasco and 13th seed Alexandr Dolgopolov.

Federer has got to this stage without dropping a set, although he had a walkover in the second round after his opponent withdrew from the event before the match.

The pair have faced each other only once before, in the Davis Cup last year, where Federer won in four sets .
