After finishing on top of the table at the end of the regular season, the Perth Scorchers will host the Melbourne Stars in the first Big Bash semi-final at the WACA on Saturday night. Not only is a berth in the Big Bash final at stake, but the finalists will also be rewarded with a place in the rich Champions League tournament against other domestic Twenty20 teams from all around the world.
Perth come into the match on the back of a nail biting one run defeat to the Sydney Sixers on Wednesday night, which brought an end to their five game unbeaten run. Although Shaun Marsh is unavailable due to international commitments, Perth will be hopeful of having Herscelle Gibbs back after he missed the last two matches with a heel injury. He and Marcus North – who has top scored in three of Perth’s past five matches- have done a great job of getting their team off to a good start. Fast bowler Nathan Rimmington could also return after missing the last match with a knee injury.
The Stars are hitting form at the right time of the season, after winning their past three matches. They defeated the Adelaide Strikers by 6 wickets at the MCG on Thursday. Luke Wright has formed a devastating opening partnership with Rob Quiney since being shifted to the top of the order, while Clint McKay and Shane Warne have led the bowling attack well. David Hussey has been a key figure in the team’s success, top scoring in four of their seven matches.
When the teams met at the MCG earlier in the year, the Scorchers won by 8 runs.
