After a week 1 loss to Dallas, and staring down the barrel of an 11-point three-quarter time deficit against Tampa Bay last weekend, it would have been easy to write the reigning Superbowl champions off as pretenders this season. Enter Giants quarterback Eli Manning, who threw for a phenomenal 243 yards in the final quarter as New York reeled in the Bucs in the final minute of the game.
Manning’s favourite targets on the weekend were Hakeem Nicks and Victor Cruz , but they probably won’t get the same latitude against Carolina . The Panthers’ secondary has allowed just one pass play of at least 30 yards this season, and they’re yet to concede a TD on a throw of 15 yards or more.
It’s exciting times in Carolina, with the passing and running game of former No. 1 draft pick Cam Newton developing nicely. Newton rushed for 14 touchdowns last year and rumbled over against the Saints again last weekend. Along with Philadelphia’s Michael Vick, he looks the most likely of all QBs to come through in first touchdown scorer markets.
