The first leg of Europa League playoff ties take place on Friday morning (AEST), with 58 clubs vying for 29 places in the group stage of the competition, including European heavyweights Liverpool, Inter Milan and Marseille. The winners of the two-legged ties will be joined by ten defeated sides from the UEFA Champions League in the group stage, which starts on September 20.
Liverpool have left Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez out of their squad for the first leg of their Europa League playoff against Hearts on Friday morning (AEST) but summer signings Joe Allen and Fabio Borini are in line to play against the Scots. Martin Skrtel and Glen Johnson have also been rested after lining up against West Brom on Saturday, while injured duo Jose Enrique and Joe Cole were not considered due to injury. The Reds opened their season with a disappointing 3-0 league defeat to West Brom on Saturday, while Hearts drew 2-2 with Inverness.
Italian giants Inter Milan take on FC Vaslui in Romania, while Newcastle United face Greek qualifiers Atromitos FC .
