Matthew Mitcham went to the Beijing Olympics four years ago with little expectation on his shoulders, but will carry the hopes of a national when he competes in the Men’s 10m platform event in London. As the defending Olympic champion, much is expected of the 24 year-old in his pet event after suffering a terrible run of injuries over the past couple of years.
Jared Tallent , who collected a silver medal and a bronze medal four years ago, will be out to add a gold medal to his collection in the Men’s 50km Race Walk. Despite finishing only seventh in the 20km event last weekend, hopes of a good performance are high after Tallent recorded a season best time in the race. Nathan Deakes , Luke Adams and Chris Erickson will also face the starter in the event, while Claire Tallent lines up in the Women’s 20km Race Walk later in the day.
The Kookaburras , Australia’s Men’s hockey team, will face Great Britain in the bronze medal game after suffering a shock loss to Germany in the semi-finals. Australia takes on Russia with a bronze medal at stake in the Women’s basketball tournament later in the day.
