World number one Luke Donald heads the strong field that has been assembled for the 2012 British Open, which starts at Royal Lytham & St Annes golf course on Thursday. He heads a strong home contingent that also includes world number two Lee Westwood and Justin Rose . Defending champion Darren Clarke is one of three major winners from Northern Ireland set to tee off, with the others being Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell .
Three time champion Tiger Woods is one of sixteen previous champions in the field and will be bidding for his first major success since 2008. Masters victor Bubba Watson and PGA Championship winner Keegan Bradley will be looking to add the claret jug to their trophy cabinets, while David Duval (2001) and Tom Lehman (1996) will have found memories of the course having won the past two Open tournament’s to have been played here.
With Jason Day sitting the event out, Adam Scott is considered the leading chance of Australia’s thirteen strong contingent, although 2006 US Open champion Geoff Ogilvy is known for his excellence on the big stage.
