Bet types available on the Cup

The Melbourne Cup Betting Wizard provides an easy way for punters to place a bet on the tote.  For all our markets and fixed price offerings, please visit our racing page for the Melbourne Cup.

When betting on the tote, your bet is pooled with other punters and the payout is calculated after the results of the race.  Fixed price offerings specify the available payout when the bet is placed.

Betting is available right up to jump time with the following bet types offered:

Win - select the runner that wins the race
Place - select a runner that finishes 1st, 2nd or 3rd
Quinella - select the first two placegetters in any order
Exacta - select the runners that place 1st & 2nd in correct order
Any2 - select any two of the first three placegetters in any order
Trifecta - select the runners that place 1st, 2nd & 3rd in correct order
First4 - select the runners that place 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th in correct order
Mystery Bet - computer selects runners for a Trifecta, First4 or combo Trifecta/Quinella (note all unmarked mystery picks as well as mystery bets default to the Melbourne Cup from start of day Monday 5 November)
Fixed Price - win, place, each way, quinella and top ten finish

The Cup is the first leg of TattsBet’s Flemington Quadrella.

Trifecta and First4 betting is always popular on the Cup due to the big field and usually return large dividends. Trifectas consistently make up more than 30% of Cup betting compared to around 20% on racing at other times of the year.

Fractional Betting

Fractional betting is available on all tote bet types, excepting win-place, and allows a punter to choose the maximum amount they wish to spend on a combination of selections. The TAB computer system will calculate the percentage allocated to each combination.

For example, a $3 outlay on a 5 horse boxed trifecta would represent 3/60 or 5% of the $60 full unit cost. If the customers combinations include a successful one, the $3 spend will give the punter 5% of the dividend. If the dividend is $3,000 then a 5% share would equate to $150.
